For decades, the Original Timberland Boot has proven to be a timeless staple of style and culture; initially built to embrace and empower the construction community but morphing toward creativity from hip-hop, fashion, and fine art.
I became a teenager in the mid-90s and was (still am) a huge Hip Hop fan. Back then, for me, it was all about East Coast Hip Hop and specifically artists from New York like Nas, Jay Z, and Biggie, all advocates of the Timberland boot.
Naturally, that influenced me, and when my family took trips to the U.S in the late 90s through to the early 2000s, along with my CD purchases that wouldn’t drop in the UK a few more months, I’d also snag a pair of Tim’s. The exchange rate for a kid without a lot of money was amazing back then.
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Highsnobiety has teamed up with the iconic footwear manufacturer to tell the story of the classic Boot through the communities that made it an icon across the world.
We’re certainly living in an era where producers are hitting all my nostalgic senses. From the Nike Air movie, lots of sports documentaries including the recent ‘Beckham’, and now this story on Timberland and its relationship to Hip Hop. I love it, keep them coming.
