Pharrell Williams' streetwear brand, Billionaires Boys Club, and the renowned luxury outerwear label, Moncler, have joined forces to bring together the best of both worlds. The partnership between the two long-time friends is more than just a typical brand collaboration; it is a personal endeavour that promises something exceptional.
The rumours of the collaboration began swirling in June when images were uploaded to Moncler's Instagram Stories, hinting at a potential collaboration with BBC. These whispers were further fueled near the end of July when the Instagram curation page, @HIDDEN.NY, shared close-up images that showcased the fusion of BBC's astronaut logo with Moncler's distinctive outline branding.
What sets this collaboration apart is its vast and diverse range of products. Unlike typical brand partnerships, the Billionaires Boys Club x Moncler line includes an extensive collection beyond what is usually seen outside of the Genius line. The offerings encompass a variety of stylish pieces, from puffer coats and t-shirts to varsity jackets, padded boots, and trail-ready sneakers.
With Pharrell Williams' creative genius and Moncler's mastery of outerwear design, fashion enthusiasts can expect a fusion of streetwear and luxury that will surely be worth the wait.
Reasons for the Collaboration
Let’s take a look at the alignment of the two brands and some speculation as to why they may have chosen to drop this collection together.
Brands collaborating are usually looking for additional value from their collaborating partner while also trying to stay in line with what their existing audience will support.
Similarities are important
Both brands are known for their high-quality products.
Both brands have a strong following among young, urban consumers.
Both brands are associated with a sense of exclusivity and status.
Differences will be looked for by both brands
Moncler is a more traditional luxury brand, while Billionaire Boys Club is a more streetwear-oriented brand.
Moncler's products are more expensive than Billionaire Boys Club's products.
Moncler's target audience is slightly older than Billionaire Boys Club's target audience.
Reasons for collaboration
To reach a new audience. Moncler could reach BBC's younger streetwear audience who will likely have more disposable income as they get older and become consumers of Moncler, while BBC could reach Moncler's more affluent audience who are no strangers to spending large sums of money on apparel.
BBC will also benefit from Moncler’s more mainstream recognition helping to elevate the brand from its more niche market. Pharrell is also the creative director of Louis Vuitton Menswear and this has been a huge talking point in recent months, Moncler can benefit from some of the hype around Pharrel in the fashion business right now.
To create excitement and buzz. A collaboration between two iconic brands is sure to generate excitement and buzz among consumers and media outlets resulting in awareness for both. Fashion media are all over this story and both brands knew this would happen.
To create new products. The two brands could collaborate to create new products that combine the best of both brands' DNA. The collaboration could be a way for both brands to tap into each other's strengths.
Sometimes brands want to expand into new designs but it can be risky when they have a loyal audience who are loyal to them because they stay within the brand’s perceived lines. Collaborating with another brand allows them to test the water with new ideas while putting the new ideas down to an isolated collection rather than a shift in brand aesthetic.
All in all, this is an exciting collaboration in the world of fashion, with two very well-respected brands run by creative leaders coming together and bringing something new to the table. I think this is a solid brand move on both sides.
Pharrell seems to be on fire with Louis Vuitton right now so it’s good to see he still has time to make serious noise with BBC.
